Madhur Bhandarkar gives us another reality check with his latest film Jail. In keeping with his past reputation of dealing with sensitive, real and impacting subjects, Bhandarkar manages to give us a glimpse of life as it is behind bars and around courts but fails to do so with his regular gutso.
An innocent Parag Dixit (Neil Nitin Mukesh) lands up behind bars in a narcotics case. While his family gets swindled by an ineffective lawyer, he languishes in jail for years. Interim, he finds himself getting swayed by offers of release from other prisoners, makes friends who wish him well and finds himself constantly swinging between hope and despair.
The movie detours from the drama one has seen in jails in earlier films that transpires between inmates amidst heavy duty violence and animosity. Instead Jail, dwells more on the trials and tribulations of an innocent man and the death of his dreams and hopes.
But the movie fails in basics with regard to loopholes in the case and its trial. The premise of the film and its investigative process are flawed from inception. To add to it are boring dialogues that seem to be coming straight out of the movies in the 80's.The treatment given to the film appears lukewarm and a lot more that could have been captured and played up has been given a miss.
There is a certain monotony to Neil Nitin Mukesh's acting and expressions throughout the film. As for Mughda Godse, her role in Fashion was far more meaty. Manoj Bajpai delivers a rather silent performance.
